My Jean Batten report

                         Jean Batten

                                                                 Introduction:
Jean Batten is a very famous well known aviator from New Zealand. She wanted to show that men and women were equal.

Jean Batten was born on the 15th September 1909 in Rotorua. Her dad worked as a dentist. Her mum worked as an actress and she also had three older brothers but sadly one died at birth.

She moved to Auckland and took part in primary school. Sadly her father moved to France to take part in the first world war. Shortly after that she went to boarding school. A while after that Jean sold her piano and moved with her mother to England. She took part in the London Aeroplane Club where she learnt to fly. Jean also was given her ‘A’ license in December 1930. Jean met a nice fellow who agreed to buy her a Gypsy Moth.

Jean broke many records such as she landed in Darwin beating Johnson’s record with 14 days and 22 hours. In 1934 she was the first woman ever to fly from England to South America. In 1936 she was the first person to make a direct flight from England to New Zealand. Jean also made a flight in 1937 from Australia to England in 15 days 18 hours. Jean was the first ever woman to be given the Federation Aeronautique medal.

Jean’s fiance died in a plane crash. Jean was terrified when she heard that he died. Jean met her second fiance but sadly he died in a plane crash too.

Jean returned to Spain, Majorca. One day Jean was taking a walk until a dog came out of nowhere and bit her on the leg. Jean refused to take medicine for her wound. The wound had gotten infected and sadly Jean died. Jean’s family did not find out she had died until 5 years later.

Jean Batten has made New Zealand proud. Jean has showed that women and men are equal. She will be best remembered for her world breaking flights and for encouraging women to become pilots.
