My Speech

My speech on: Should animals be kept in the circus? By Fine
Circuses with animal acts might seem perfect and jubilant, but if you looked beneath their bright lights and happy music, torture and death is the only thing found. Almost everyday animals are being put into cages and abused just to learn the ways ofa stunt. Why should they be kept away from their homes, lives and families. Why do people hunt down animals just to put them into their entertainment?

Even during shows, bullhooks can be found hidden beneath jewels and cloth. They disguise these weapons so that they may use them during shows, but hide them, so the public won't have a clue. Trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks and much more. Did you know that some animals have ropes tied around their necks, so if they disobey their trainers, they will be choked. Trainers also burn bears paws and break their noses forcing the bears to stand on their hind legs. Trainers also beat up monkeys and chimpanzees while they scream.

As a result of not having a lot of money, circus operations will frequently not give their animals enough water, food,  clean their cages properly or give them medical care when needed. Animals die just because of this.

According to the Animal Welfare Act, 96 percent of a circus animal’s life is spent in chains or cages. 66 per cent of tigers and lions were starved to death. Between 1994 - 2005, 31 elephants died premature deaths. 33 per cent of wildcats such as tigers and lions did not have access to the outside world and did not have a natural habitat. All wild animals are very frightened of seeing cages and chains. Animals spend about 11 months travelling, during travelling, animals are caged and chained for long distances and hours through extreme temperatures.

This is the life behind the magic. Believe it or not,but animal cruelty doesn't just happen in circuses. If you love animals, you should take a visit to the zoo, where they are taken care of and have a proper habitat. You could also visit circuses without animal acts like Cirque Du Soleil. If everyone stopped abusing animals then life would be much easier. So stop!!

Languages

Languages

Did you know there are more than 6,300 languages spoken worldwide. There are such interesting languages. Languages are much more that just the way we communicate to each other. Languages showcase our vocabulary and reflect our ability to understand complex conversations. However more importantly languages give us the ability to communicate with family, friends and other people which allows us to build lifelong relationships with others. We learn to speak languages in order to communicate, basically we learn the language in the country we live in. For example : We live in New Zealand so we learnt to speak English.

The Sea

 The Sea

If you looked down at earth from Space, you would see that most of our planet is covered by water. This huge amount of water is separated into five areas, called oceans, by land. The oceans are the Artic, Antarctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific. Smaller areas of the oceans are called seas. Two of the largest seas are the Caribbean and Mediterranean. If you have ever swum in the seawater and tasted seawater , you will know that it is salty. Most of the salt comes from rocks on the land. When rocks are worn down by the wind and rain, the salt they contain is washed into the sea by rivers. It builds up and makes the water salty. All seawater is not the same temperature. Sunlight warms the water near the surface of the sea. Where the sun shines longest the water is warmest. The sea helps to control our weather. It does this by soaking up heat from the sun and slowly releasing it. Unlike the land, the seawater warms up and cools down slowly. This means places near the sea have milder winters and cooler summers than those inland. The sea is never still. Currents, like huge rivers, carry water from one part of the world to another. Some flow near the surface. Others flow deep down, along the seafloor.

Earth

 Earth

What is Earth you ask. Well our planet earth is a huge rocky ball. It Is one of the nine planets that travel around the sun. From Space, Earth looks blue because seas and lakes cover nearly three – quarters of its surface. Our planet has hot deserts, steamy rain forests and freezing cold North and South poles. In some parts, the land rises to make high mountains. The outside of Earth is a thin shell of hard rock with soil and water on top. The shell is called the crust. Soil is made of tiny pieces of eroded, or worn down, rock mixed with dead plants. Plants get water and food from the soil, through their roots. Many animals live underground and make their homes in the soil. The Earth's crust, or surface is divided into enormous pieces called plates. These plates are always moving very slowly. When plates move apart, the hot, runny rock below them rushes up to the surface and a volcano erupts. The hot, runny rock that comes out of a volcano is called Lava. When plates bump or scrape against each other, earthquakes occur.

Science

 Science / Scientists
Science is about finding out. It helps us make sense of our world. Science begins with observation. This means looking at things very carefully. Scientists work in different ways and study many subjects, such as biology, astronomy, medicine, geology and chemistry. Much has been discovered through science, but there is a lot to find out about our world. Scientists see things happening and start to ask complex questions. Sometimes they guess at possible answers. Then they carry out experiments, or tests, to see if they were right. When scientists carry out experiments they measure and record what is happening. They might do the same test several times. The results are often worked out with computers. Time is very important to scientists. They often need to measure exactly how long it takes something to happen. Over thousands of years, people have invented different clocks. Candles, shadows and sand have been used to measure the passing of hours and minutes. Today, scientists can measure in seconds and even tiny parts of a second, so their results can be extremely accurate.

Machines

 Machines

Machines are all around us in our daily lives. They help us do a job and can make all kinds of work easier. Machines can also do things for us that we cannot do ourselves. Some machines are very  simple. Did you know a pair of scissors is a machine? So is a corkscrew. Other machines, such as spacecraft and planes, are very complicated. The first machines were invented thousands of years ago. Many of these simple machines are still in use today.  A lever makes it easier to move loads. A wheel and axle moves things along the ground. A pulley makes lifting easier. These simple machines are part of many complicated machines we use everyday.

Dinosaurs

 Dinosaurs

Long before humans appeared, reptiles called dinosaurs roamed and ruled the Earth. Theirs was a very different world from ours, and many different types of dinosaurs learned to live among the thick forests and on the vast plains. Dinosaurs were the most successful animals that ever lived. They were the rulers of life on Earth for an amazing 165 million ears. Humans have been around for only about 100,000 years, so far. The first dinosaurs appeared 230 million years ago. The last of these creatures died out 65 million years. The earliest of the dinosaurs appeared in the second half of the Triassic period. At this time, the world looked very different from the way it does today because the land was all in one big piece, called Pangaea. There were no seas to block the way, so the Triassic dinosaurs were able to travel easily across the land. They were soon living all over the world. The large mass, Pangaea started to break into two continents. Many remarkable new dinosaurs came into existence. Did a huge meteorite strike Earth 65 million years ago and kill all the dinosars? Most experts believe this is what happened. The main evidence for the meteorite theory is a huge crater found in Mexico. Many other theories about what killed the dinosaurs have been proposed, but a giant meteorite is the most likely one.

My recount on Des Hunt

My recount on went Des Hunt visited

It was a cold windy day and the best reliever was teaching our class. She announced that an author by the name of Des Hunt was coming for a visit. I wasn't that excited at first but when I saw all his equipment on the table, I was easily excited. He was an old man but he looked happy sharing his inventions and whatnot s with us. He started off with talking about his personal life, then got into action. I didn't really understand because I was caught up in the moment at the end of his explosions. He did a BANG!!. From then on we were waiting for his next arrival.
