My reading activity on Brooklyn School Writers Walk. By Fine

Ruby Group 1:
Title: Brooklyn School Writers Walk
School Journal Part 3, Number 2, 2010

Learning Intention
I am learning to link prior knowledge and experiences into the texts I read

1. How were the students inspired to do their own Brooklyn Writers Walk?
They were inspired by a visit to Wellington Writers Walk.

2. How was it a bit like a treasure hunt?
It was like a treasure hunt because they had to find all the poems between Chaffers Marina and Frank Kitts Park.

3. How did the students prepare for the Writers walk?
They made thirty focus questions and then they diveded the questions and themselves into five groups.

4. What were some of the roles and responsibilities?
Publicity, collecting the poems, designing the poem cards, locating the cards and coordinating the groups to ensure everyone was kept up to date.

5. Why did the competition last for ages?
Because they went around classes reminding students about the competition, they also made help sheets for the Younger students and invited teacher, parents and people from the Brooklyn Community.

6. How did the poetry group work out the winners?
They made two piles. “One was pretty good” and the other was “not so good” and they picked out the winners.

7. What was the judging criteria?
First of all, it had to be about Brooklyn but they also looked for effective use of some of the following poetic features: Vivid use of languages and imagery, rhythm, strong verbs, similes and metaphors, alliteration and assonance, personification and onomatopoeia.

8. What were the options for displaying the poems?
They wanted to display the poems where there was shelter, people would pass by a lot, would not be damaged and the location had to have a surface for the poem to stick against.

9. Why was corrugated plastic the best option?
Well their principal suggested to use the same plastic that their school uses.  - corrugated plastic.

10. What were some of the things they wanted to include on the display?
They included their school logo, but they still included the authors name and the title of the poem.

11. What were some of the reasons for the ideal location?
They wanted to display the poems where there was shelter, people would pass by a lot, would not be damaged and the location had to have a surface for the poem to stick against.

12. Why was it easier with the prototype?
Yes because it allows them to create one and criticise and make it better.

13. Describe the opening ceremony
The opening ceremony was held on Friday 24 July 2009. The minister of arts, culture and heritage also came as the guest of honour.
